Seeing your website appear prominently on Google can feel like confirmation that your SEO strategy is working. But rankings alone don't pay the bills.
If your website is ranking well but organic search isn't generating enquiries, the problem may not be how highly you rank. It could be what you're ranking for and what happens after somebody clicks.
Are you ranking for the right search terms?
Not every Google search has the same commercial value.
Someone searching "what is vibration monitoring?" may simply be researching the subject. Someone searching "industrial vibration monitoring systems UK" is potentially much closer to choosing a supplier.
Both searches can generate website traffic, but their likelihood of producing an enquiry is very different.
This is why an effective SEO strategy needs to consider search intent alongside search volumes and rankings.
Does the landing page match the search?
Getting someone to click your Google result is only part of the job.
The page they reach must satisfy the reason they searched in the first place.
If somebody searches for a specific service but arrives on a generic page that barely mentions it, they may quickly return to Google and look elsewhere.
Strong SEO landing pages should provide enough relevant information to demonstrate expertise while making the next step obvious.
Are you targeting informational searches only?
Informational content has an important role in SEO. Guides, articles and technical resources can increase visibility and introduce your business to potential customers.
However, an SEO strategy dominated by informational keywords can generate impressive traffic figures without necessarily generating many sales opportunities.
A balanced strategy should also target searches associated with commercial investigation and buying decisions.
That might include searches involving products, services, applications, industries, locations or specific problems that your company can solve.
What happens after the organic click?
SEO shouldn't finish at the point somebody reaches your website.
Consider what an organic visitor sees next. Is your expertise immediately apparent? Can they find relevant case studies? Are your accreditations or capabilities visible? Is there a clear way to make an enquiry?
For specialist B2B purchases, the visitor may not be ready to contact you immediately, so internal links to useful supporting information can also help them continue their research.
Measure SEO against business objectives
Rankings remain a useful SEO indicator, but they shouldn't be viewed in isolation.
Organic enquiries, conversions, engaged visits and the quality of leads generated provide a much clearer picture of whether SEO is contributing to your business.
At BBI Brandboost, our approach to SEO focuses on more than achieving rankings. We consider the searches your potential customers are making, the intent behind them and the experience they receive when they reach your website.
Because ultimately, the objective isn't simply to rank on Google. It's to be found by the right people and give them a compelling reason to contact you.
